Printable Spring Sprinkler Checklist

Printable Sprinkler Zone Log (Run Each Zone + Record Repairs)

If your yard has multiple irrigation zones, the easiest way to improve coverage (and stop wasting water) is to label your zones and write down what’s actually installed. Our printable Sprinkler Zone Worksheet helps you capture the key details for each zone—so troubleshooting and scheduling gets easier every season.

How to Use the Worksheet (3 easy steps)

  1. Name the zone with something obvious (Front Lawn, Side Yard Beds, Backyard Trees).
  2. Run the zone for about 2–5 minutes—long enough to observe coverage and spot leaks.
  3. Check one box per category so your zone design and schedule make sense later.

What Each Category Means

Sunlight

Choose the option that best describes that zone’s exposure: Full Sun, Part Sun, Part Shade, or Full Shade. Sun exposure heavily impacts watering needs—full sun turf typically needs more frequent watering than shaded areas.

Sprinkler / Emitter Type

Select the type of irrigation equipment used in that zone:

  • Single-Stream Rotor – Rotates and throws a single stream about 20–45 ft (includes impact sprinklers).
  • Multi-Stream Rotor – Rotates and throws multiple streams about 15–40 ft.
  • Fixed Spray – Fan-shaped spray pattern, typically 5–15 ft, and does not rotate.
  • Bubbler – Close-in flood pattern (generally under 2 ft) for trees/shrubs or small basins.
  • Drip – Water delivered from emitters or drip tubing with factory-installed emitters.
  • Micro-spray – Water delivered from micro-sprinklers or micro-bubblers for beds and low-volume zones.

Plant Type

Choose the dominant plant material in the zone (Grass, Beds, Shrubs, Trees). This helps you avoid watering everything like it’s turf (a common reason shrubs get overwatered).

Slope

Mark whether the zone is Low, Medium, or High slope. Sloped zones often need cycle-and-soak scheduling (shorter run times with breaks) to prevent runoff.

Soil Type

Pick the soil that best describes the zone: Sand (drains fast), Loam (balanced), or Clay (absorbs slowly). Clay and compacted soils tend to benefit most from cycle-and-soak watering.

What to Look For While Each Zone Runs

  • Heads that don’t pop up, are tilted, or missing
  • Overspray onto sidewalks, driveways, siding, or the street
  • Misting/fogging (often pressure/nozzle mismatch)
  • Bubbling at a head (riser/leak) or soggy spots between heads (possible lateral leak)

Quick FAQ

Why does sprinkler type matter?

Different head types apply water at different rates. Identifying the head type helps you schedule run times properly and avoid mixing incompatible heads in the same zone.

How long should I run a test cycle?

Long enough to observe coverage and mark issues—usually a few minutes per zone is plenty.

What if a zone has mixed plants?

Choose the dominant plant type and make a note. If a zone constantly struggles (too wet for shrubs, too dry for lawn), it may be a good candidate to split into separate zones later.
