1) INSPECT (Walk the yard first)
- Check backflow area (if above ground) for cracks, missing caps, or obvious damage.
- Open valve boxes: look for split fittings, loose unions, and rodent-chewed wires.
- Look for sunken spots or unusually green patches (possible underground leak).
- Confirm controller time/date and battery (if applicable).
2) CONNECT (Pressurize safely)
- Turn controller OFF (or “Rain/Delay”).
- Slowly open the main irrigation shutoff to fill lines gently (prevents water hammer).
- Pause 60 seconds and re-check valve boxes/backflow area for leaks.
- Confirm no constant hissing/running water sound when all zones are OFF.
3) DIRECT (Run every zone)
- Manual test each zone (2–5 minutes).
- Replace/repair broken heads, missing nozzles, stuck pop-ups.
- Adjust direction to avoid spraying sidewalks/siding/street.
- Fix misting/fogging (often pressure/nozzle mismatch).
- Check for bubbling at heads or soggy spots between heads (leak signs).
4) SELECT (Set a spring schedule)
- Start light: early spring usually needs less than summer.
- Use cycle-and-soak on slopes/clay to reduce runoff.
- Enable rain sensor/seasonal adjust (if available).
- Recheck schedule in 2 weeks and adjust for weather/plant growth.
