Rain Bird RD04SP45FN 4-Inch SAM 45 PSI Spray Body — Non-Potable
Brand: Rain Bird | SKU: RD04SP45FN
Product Overview
Equip a non-potable rotary-nozzle zone with a 4-inch pop-up body that combines 45 psi regulation, SAM drainage protection and Flow-Shield service indication. Rain Bird RD04SP45FN is the purple-marked non-potable configuration. Its 6-inch body and bottom-only inlet define replacement fit; select the nozzle separately.
Key Features
- Triple-Blade Wiper Seal balances flushing and debris protection.
- Debris pockets help keep grit from recirculating inside the body.
- Reinforced ratchet ring supports nozzle-pattern alignment.
- Top-access internal components simplify service.
- Built-in 45 psi pressure regulator.
- SAM check valve helps prevent low-head drainage across elevation changes up to 14 feet.
- Flow-Shield produces a low-flow service-indication stream when a nozzle is missing or damaged.
- Purple non-potable identification with “DO NOT DRINK / NO BEBA” warnings and symbol.
Common Uses
- Non-potable rotary-nozzle layouts requiring regulated pressure and drainage protection.
- Replacing a matching RD1800 body after checking pop-up height, features and inlet fit.
Technical Specifications

- Exposed surface diameter: 2-1/4 inches.
Compatibility & Installation Notes
Check finished grade, the 6-inch body height and the 4-inch pop-up stroke. Connect through the bottom inlet; the SAM check valve relies on that bottom connection.
Measure operating pressure and confirm the supply supports the 45 psi nozzle target and combined zone demand. A regulator cannot boost inadequate supply pressure.
Choose a compatible Rain Bird nozzle and filter screen, flush before nozzling and align the pattern using the stem ratchet. Follow the selected nozzle’s own radius and arc instructions.
The SAM check valve limits drainage after shutdown; it does not close a leaking upstream control valve.
For flushing, the RD1800 Flow-Shield instructions call for removing internals at lateral or branch ends, flushing until clear, then reinstalling them. Install the appropriate nozzle filter screen for proper Flow-Shield operation. Its indication stream signals a service need; it is not a complete water shutoff.
Select this non-potable model by SKU and purple identification. Family photos and videos may also show standard white covers or other RD1800 options; the included features are listed above.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it include a nozzle?
No. Choose a compatible nozzle and the required screen separately for the desired arc, reach and flow.
Does this model include Flow-Shield?
Yes. It produces a low-flow indication stream when a nozzle is missing or damaged, helping identify a service need. It does not shut off all water.
Can I use a side inlet?
No. This SAM model requires its 1/2-inch female NPT bottom inlet.
Will its regulator increase low supply pressure?
No. The regulator reduces available pressure. The technical specification gives a 50–100 psi inlet range for the 45 psi regulation target; check pressure while the zone operates.
Why Buy from Big Frog Supply?
Choose RD04SP45FN for a non-potable rotary-nozzle layout needing a 45 psi target plus a visible Flow-Shield indication when a nozzle is missing or damaged. Its 4-inch stroke and 6-inch body fit a shallower installation than the 6-inch pop-up version, while the SAM valve supports up to 14 feet of elevation head. Select RD04SP45NP instead when Flow-Shield is not required.
