How to Install the Moen Flo Smart Water Monitor & Shutoff
The Flo Smart Water Monitor & Shutoff helps prevent costly water damage by monitoring flow, pressure, and temperature—and shutting off your water automatically if a major leak is detected. Follow this quick, code-friendly guide for a clean install and smooth app setup.
Before You Start
- Location: Install on the main cold-water line after the home’s existing shutoff valve and pressure reducing valve (if present), and before any branches to fixtures. Avoid installing upstream of fire sprinkler/suppression systems.
- Power: A nearby AC outlet (100–240 VAC, 50/60 Hz) within ~10 ft is required. For longer reaches, use Moen’s low-voltage extension cable (not high-voltage extension cords). GFCI is recommended.
- Wi-Fi: The device connects to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network via the Moen Smart Water app (iOS/Android).
- Orientation & pressure: Mount with the arrow pointing toward the house. Flo is recommended for continuous pressure up to ~80 PSI. For outdoor installs, use a weather-resistant enclosure at least 12" above grade.
- Pipe size: Choose the model that matches your main (¾", 1", or 1¼").

Tools & Materials
- Pipe cutter & deburring tool (match your pipe material)
- Fittings/adapters, unions, and sealant appropriate for copper/PEX/CPVC
- Mounting hardware or backer board, screws/anchors
- Bucket & towels; safety glasses & gloves
- Smartphone with the Moen Smart Water app installed
Step-by-Step Installation
- Plan & measure. Confirm pipe size and pick a straight, accessible section after the main shutoff and PRV. Verify there’s a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal and an AC outlet within 10 ft (use Moen’s low-voltage extension cable if needed).
- Shut off & drain. Close the main valve. Open a high-point faucet (and a couple others) to relieve pressure and drain.
- Mark clearances. Leave service space around the device for unions and O-ring joints (see clearance diagram in the manual). Keep the install spacer that ships with the unit for future service.
- Cut & prep. Cut out a section of main. Deburr and dry-fit the Flo device with the arrow pointing toward the home. Add/adapt fittings as needed and keep the device level.
- Mount & connect. Secure the device and tighten connections per fitting type. For outdoor installs, mount inside a weather-resistant enclosure at least 12" above grade.
- Power & pair. Plug in the power supply, open the Moen Smart Water app, create your account, and add the device. Connect to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and follow the prompts.
- Turn on water & check. Slowly reopen the main valve. Check for leaks, then run water so Flo can read flow. Confirm the app shows live flow/pressure.
- Let it learn. Over the first week, Flo learns your usage patterns; after ~7–10 days it transitions into normal protection mode and will alert on anomalies.
Quick Tips
- Flow direction matters: the arrow on the body must point toward the home.
- Keep unions accessible: leave a little “give” so O-rings aren’t pinched during service.
- Pressure on the high side? Verify PRV function and set within spec; high static pressure can trigger alerts.
Code & licensing: Always follow local plumbing/electrical code. A licensed plumber/electrician may be required in your area.
