How to know which Gas Regulator to use?
How to Know Which Gas Regulator to Use (Practical Guide)
Selecting the right gas regulator comes down to fuel type (NG vs LP), outlet pressure, and capacity (BTU/CFH). Use the quick steps and table below, then shop regulators and accessories that fit your install.
Step 1 — Set Your Target Outlet Pressure
- Natural Gas (NG): many appliances target about 3.5" w.c. at the inlet (check your rating plate).
- Propane (LP): many appliances target about 10–11" w.c.
- 2-PSI systems: Use a line regulator to step 2 psi down to appliance pressure (e.g., 11" w.c.).
Step 2 — Size Capacity (BTU/CFH)
- Add the BTU/hr input of the appliance(s) served by the regulator.
- Convert if needed: 1 CFH ≈ 1,000 BTU/hr.
- Pick a regulator whose capacity ≥ load at your outlet pressure.
| What You Know | What to Choose | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| One appliance at 100,000 BTU/hr (NG) | Appliance regulator rated ≥100k BTU/hr @ ~3.5" w.c. | Check model chart for capacity vs. setpoint. |
| Multiple appliances, 2-PSI house piping | Line regulator (2 psi → 11" w.c.) sized for combined BTU | Place near the appliance manifold; verify venting method. |
| Indoor install needs no vent piping | Regulator approved with vent limiter | Use only if listed by the manufacturer for your model. |
Regulator Types (Where They’re Used)
- Appliance regulator: final stage control at the appliance inlet.
- Line/intermediate regulator: steps intermediate pressure (e.g., 2 psi) down to appliance pressure.
- Service regulator: utility side (street to building)—usually not homeowner-supplied.
Indoor vs. Outdoor & Venting
- Outdoors: vent screen faces down and is kept clear.
- Indoors: pipe the vent outside or use a listed vent-limiting device per the model instructions.
- Never plug or cap a regulator vent.
Install Checklist
- Confirm fuel (NG/LP), inlet pressure range, and outlet setpoint.
- Mount in the correct flow direction; keep vents unobstructed.
- Use gas-rated sealant on NPT; no sealant on flare seats.
- Leak-test all joints; verify outlet pressure under load.
