Rinnai SENSEI® RX: How to Set the Gas Type (NG ↔ LP) – Quick Installer Guide

Rinnai SENSEI® RX: How to Set the Gas Type (NG ↔ LP) – Quick Installer Guide

How to Set the Gas Type (NG ↔ LP)

The SENSEI RX series supports both Natural Gas (NG) and Propane (LP). Thanks to Rinnai’s adaptive gas controls, you’ll set the gas type in the unit’s parameter menu (no orifice swap), verify combustion, and apply the conversion label. Follow the steps below or watch the quick video.

Before You Start

  • Confirm supply: NG ≈ 3.5–10.5" w.c. / LP ≈ 8.0–13.5" w.c. (check rating plate and your local code).
  • Power on the unit — note that Gas Type can be changed only within ~20 minutes of powering the heater (cycle power if needed).
  • Tools (recommended): #2 Phillips, gas analyzer (for combustion check), metal tape for the test port cap, conversion label (comes with kit/manual).
  • Safety: gas work must follow NFPA 54/ANSI Z223.1 or CSA B149.1 and local code; when in doubt, hire a licensed pro.
Heads up: If you’re setting LP, you’ll affix the supplied gas conversion label near the rating plate after you finish and verify combustion.

Set the Gas Type (Installer Menu)

  1. Remove the front panel (two screws, two latches) to access the lower front PC board.
  2. Press the PC board’s “A” button for ~1 second to enter Parameter Settings. The controller will show a parameter like 01A/01b.
  3. Use the controller Up/Down arrows to navigate to Parameter 10 (Gas Type) so the display reads 10A or 10b.
  4. Press the controller On/Off button to toggle the selection:
    • 10A = Natural Gas (NG)
    • 10b = Propane (LP)
  5. Save & Exit: press and hold the PC board “A” button for ~1 second.

Verify Combustion

Run water to fire the burner for at least five minutes, then verify combustion one of two ways:

  1. Preferred: Insert a gas analyzer probe into the combustion test port and confirm readings fall in the RX spec ranges.
  2. Visual: Through the sight glass, confirm a stable, even blue flame over the burner surface (no lifting or persistent yellowing).

Finish Up

  • Complete and affix the gas conversion label near the existing rating plate (required when selecting LP).
  • Set other parameters as needed: 14 (Indoor/Outdoor), 02 (Altitude), etc.
  • Leak-check all joints and confirm inlet gas pressure is within the range for your fuel.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • No ignition or “no flame”? Re-confirm Gas Type (10), fuel in tank (LP), correct inlet pressure, bleed air, and that the flame rod/igniter connections are secure.
  • Can’t access Parameter 10? Cycle power and re-enter the menu; Gas Type is editable only shortly after power-up.

Note: Always follow the Rinnai installation/operation manual for your exact model. Local code may require a licensed installer and permit.

Model-Specific Notes (RX199 Series)

Rinnai’s naming key helps you pick the right unit: i = Indoor, e = Outdoor, N = Natural Gas, P = Propane. Even if a unit ships as “N” or “P”, SENSEI® RX lets you set the fuel in the menu (Parameter 10 → 10A = NG, 10b = LP) and then verify combustion. Always label the conversion when selecting LP.

Rinnai RX199iN — Indoor, Natural Gas

Factory “N” (Natural Gas). Can be set to LP if needed via Parameter 10. Ideal for indoor installs with concentric or 2-pipe PVC/CPVC/PP venting per manual.

Rinnai RX199iP — Indoor, Propane

Factory “P” (Propane). Can be set to NG if the supply changes. After selecting LP (10b), verify combustion and apply the LP conversion label.

Rinnai RX199eN — Outdoor, Natural Gas

Outdoor enclosure—no indoor venting hardware. Parameter 10 allows NG/LP selection within ~20 minutes of power-up.

Rinnai RX199eP — Outdoor, Propane

Outdoor, factory “P.” Switchable to NG via Parameter 10 if needed. Confirm inlet pressure is within spec before combustion check.

Quick Checklist by Model

  • Indoor (i): use listed vent materials and clearances; set Indoor/Outdoor parameter (14) = Indoor.
  • Outdoor (e): no venting hardware; set parameter 14 = Outdoor.
  • N vs P: select Gas Type in Parameter 10 (10A NG / 10b LP), then verify combustion and label when LP.
  • Altitude: set Parameter 02 per site elevation for proper combustion control.
