Quick choosing guide
- Define the job: sump pit, septic effluent, sewage, drain/condensate, utility transfer, or irrigation boost.
- Match flow and lift: find required GPM and total dynamic head (vertical lift plus friction). Pick a pump that meets the curve at that point.
- Know the water type: clear water (sump/utility), effluent (small solids), or sewage (2 in solids typical). Choose the right impeller and discharge size.
- Automatic vs manual: select built in float, tethered, or piggyback switch for pits; manual for temporary transfer with a separate switch if needed.
- Power and plumbing: confirm 115 or 230V, amperage, and cord length. Match discharge (1.25 to 2 in typical) and add a check valve and unions for service.
- Backup planning: battery capacity and charger size determine runtime; water powered backups require adequate city water pressure and a proper drain.
Pro tips: Use an 18 x 22 in or larger basin for most sump installs, place the pump on a stand to keep debris out, and install a full port check valve above the pit. Test the float and alarm, label the circuit, and add a high water alarm on finished spaces. For backups, test monthly and replace batteries per the maker. Winterize exposed piping and protect outdoor pumps from weather.
